Le Baron Rouge

The Place

Quench your thirst for good wine with quality local vintages at this unpretentious blue-collar bar. Popular with locals, this tiny den devoted to the love of wine often has crowds spilling out onto the pavements. Serving wine straight from the barrel, this beloved Parisian institution also offers simple plates of charcuterie, as well as oysters on Sundays. If you’re unsure of what you’d like, go for the “Wine of the Month.” Alternatively, you can ask the staff for recommendations.

Insider Tips

Those locals in the know bring their empty bottles here to fill them direct – and more cheaply – from the barrels. There’s also a good selection of bottles available to take away. What to try: The light, fruity Beaujolais in the barrel from Michel Guignier.

Second best way to experience oysters (first being at the seaside). Very busy, you’ll struggle to find a spot but when you do you feel like you’re absolutely winning. You choose the number of oysters you want and the size of them (price varies according to this), then the team open them and plate them with some rye bread, salted butter and lemon wedges. They also do little pots of grey shrimps. Best paired with a glass of white wine :) Make the most of the autumn weather to go, can be quite a miserable experience in the freezing cold and drizzle.
