It is not hard to understand why Prague(Praha) is amongst the top 50 most beautiful cities in the world when you wander along its cobbled pavements and pass by absolutely whimsical architecture. Known as the City of 100 Spires, Prague enchants you at every corner with architecture that takes you back to times long past. From gothic architecture to deconstructivism, these are the picture-perfect spots of Prague you can’t miss.

Iconic Old Town

A trip to Prague just wouldn’t be complete without a visit to it’s UNESCO world heritage site of Old Town Square. Baroque shophouses surround a square which comes alive with multiple performances during the evenings and throughout the weekends.

The Astronomical Clock is also a sight to behold, proudly standing at 600 years old. At the end of each hour (from 9 am to 11 pm daily), statues of the 12 apostles make appearances. It not only tells you the time according to modern day clocks, it also holds a wealth of information (for those who can read it) about zodiacs, seasons and events.

Tired of being outdoors? Take a break in the world’s most beautiful library which is a mere few steps away from Charles Bridge. With over 20, 000 books and a whole section dedicated to recording the weather since 1775, I wouldn’t be surprised if you find your head in the clouds and lose track of time.

When you are done admiring the baroque architecture of Klementinum library, head over to the world-renowned, Charles Bridge. Built in 1357, the gothic bridge is home to many monuments of saints, including St John of Nepomuk who was thrown from the bridge in an execution. Touching his plaque is said to bring you good luck.

Next, we explore the stunning St Vitus Cathedral which perches high above the city, at Prague Castle and can be seen from Charles Bridge. Initially built in the french gothic style, it was only finished 2 centuries later and furnished with renaissance details.

Stepping into the Cathedral, you would be amazed by its high arched ceilings and mosaic art in each of the chapels displaying the story of the Last Supper. For Catholics, the atmosphere of attending mass is augmented by the soothing music that resonates in the air. If you are purely on a sightseeing mission, you will need to purchase tickets to access the church and other areas of the castle which hold exhibits as well.

For more information, you can refer to the castle’s official website here.

Art Nouveau New Town

While the Old Town definitely has its charms, you might appreciate staying in the newer part of town which boasts Art Nouveau architecture. This style models building facades to look like they are part of nature with lots of natural light streaming in. The Palace Hotel, reconstructed multiple times since the 13th century is one such example of this art style.

Another notable building that many would travel to Prague to study for its unique structure is the Dancing House. Modeled after the shape of two dancers, this modern-deconstructivism hotel features a conference room and rooftop terrace in which you can admire the view of the city.

Last but not least, the Jewish Quarter holds many gems for you to discover. Believed to have been preserved in World War Two by Hitler to be a “Museum of an Extinct Race”, many jewish artefacts were bought over from other parts of Europe to be kept. With many gothic synagogues, you will get your fill of spires and perfectly symmetrical photographs.

Each synagogue has its own prices for entry so a guided tour to include all the attractions could save you a fair bit.

If you would like to book tickets, you can head over to their website!

Prague is truly a beautiful city with many spots to visit. Architecture and photographs aside, it stands out for its vibrant, loud energy which you have to be present in the moment for.
