Unlike the ever-popular and expensive Johor Bahru that Singaporeans love to visit, Penang has a luxurious shopping market at great savings. Been eyeing that Gucchi handbag for awhile now? Here are the malls in Penang that will satisfy your needs.
Gurney Plaza
As one of the largest malls on the island, Gurney Plaza has three main tenants: Parkson Grand, Golden Screen Cinemas, and Cold Storage supermarkets. It caters to the rich residents nearby with international brands. It is also connected to G Hotel.
Gurney Paragon Mall
This mall has a one of a kind architecture, being built on top of a chapel that was built in 1925. St Joseph’s Chapel was restored and is on the first floor of the nine stories mall. Peranakan inspired elements have also been incorporated throughout the building with mosaic tiles and furnishings. Needless to say, the mall offers a mix of international and local boutiques. Recently, pop-out stalls have been opened to attract the youth.
1st Avenue
Just around the corner from Prangin Mall, is the modern 1st Avenue Mall. Modeled after malls in Singapore, you will feel at home. For fashion and snacks, head to the “Underground” in the basement and for a movie or karaoke, head to level 8, “Cloud 8”, which also boasts a stunning view of Georgetown. Insider tip: Just next to the two malls mentioned above is the Penang Sentral Interchange where you can catch a free tourist bus to all the major sightseeing attractions in Penang!
Penang Times Square
With gorgeous outdoor fountains, and many good restaurants within (but expensive), Penang Times Square is an iconic landmark of Georgetown. Have a drink in the evening at their popular bars such as Soju Room to unwind from a day of sightseeing.
P.S. I recommend checking out the Mcdonalds just next to it, in its stylish colonial building.
Queensbay Mall
Located near the Penang Bridge, this mall is one of the newest and features a “low rise walk-through” layout in which shoppers enjoy easy access to not just products, but visual signs of deals and directions. The third floor houses Golden Screen Cinemas complex, karaoke center, and even a rollerskating rink.
Penang Plaza
Revamped in 2010, Penang Plaza is one of the better-maintained malls that also has office space and tenants in its upper levels. Centrally located and next to the Royal Hotel, you can easily reach it for necessities from its Giant Supermarket or Guardian Pharmacy.
Getting the best deals while shopping is a respected sport, so be sure to do it during sale seasons which are often during the children’s school holidays!
