Watch as the Civic District lights up after dark, bringing you awe-inspiring, not-to-be-missed exhibitions and installations that will take your breath away.

If you remember our coverage for Light to Night 2021, you’re going to love this iconic festival’s long-awaited comeback. 2022’s edition of Light to Night – aptly named New Ways of Seeing, Thinking, and Being – boasts eye-catching light installations and immersive experiences that electrify the monuments across the Civic District, namely: the National Gallery Singapore, The Arts House, Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall, and the Asian Civilisations Museum.

A marquee event of the Singapore Art Week, the Light to Night Festival 2022 spans across three weeks, from 14 January until 3 February 2022. Here are some top highlights from this year’s edition of the highly anticipated event.

Kickstart the 2022 Light to Night Festival journey by immersing yourself in the light show at the front of the National Gallery, a brainchild brought to you by Metamo Industries. This large-scale light projection showcase takes over the gallery facade, and is brought to life by electronic music and animation inspired by Singapore’s iconic HDBs.

Resembling a flock of birds in motion, this symphony of colourful lights discloses an illusion of motion, making use of the surrounding light and shadows. Flight by Lifewerkz is also an interactive exhibition, inviting its viewers to take a closer look and use their Bluetooth-enabled mobile devices to generate a harmony of lights and colours.

Located at The Arts House, this light projection is proudly presented by Nanyang Polytechnic’s School of Design and Media. The theme centres around searching for a great escape, leading to different trajectories and dark paths, and eventually glowing revelations. Most of the time, these experiences are unexpected, which forces reflection and adaptation. We must admit it’s quite a contemplative light show.

The Asian Civilisations Museum’s light projection shows off a more animated style, recounting mythologies and making historical references that will take you back in time to a place filled with magic and adventure. If you truly choose to engross yourself in the stunning, magical light show like we did, then this artwork will leave a strong impression.

Within the National Gallery sits a large-scale institutional exhibition featuring the works of a visionary artist named Nam June Paik, and showcases the use of television and video in his art that has spanned five decades.

Coining the term “electronic superhighway”, Paik is revered as one of the most prominent figures in the avant-garde movements of the 20th century. Experience his enthralling works in the only Asian venue for this exhibition, which is open late to commemorate the Light to Night Festival.

Perched atop the Gallery’s Supreme Court Terrace on level four is the Art x Social Festival Market, which we felt was the highlight of this year’s Light to Night Festival. Featuring everything from booths showcasing a wide array of craft-making activities to art journaling to personality-inspired claw machines and an aura photo booth, visitors are encouraged to flex their creative muscles while shopping and supporting local creators.
