The Forbidden City, located in the centre of Beijing, was the imperial palace for 24 emperors during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368 - 1911). Back then, access was forbidden without a special permission from the emperor; hence its name 'The Forbidden City'. In 1987, the Forbidden City was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Once you cross Tian'anmen Gate, you will access a walled complex covering an area of 1,110,000 square meters. This magnificent architectural complex is famously known in China as the Palace Museum. Within its walls, there are various paintings, calligraphy, ceramics, and antiquities of the imperial collections. You may also notice that yellow is the dominant color within the walls as yellow is the symbolic colour of royalty. Roofs are built with yellow glazed tiles; decorations in the palace are painted yellow; even the bricks on the ground are made yellow by a special process. In order to access the museum, please show your passport at the entrance turnstiles for direct access.
