The Badaling section of the Great Wall is located 80 kilometers northwest from downtown Beijing and it’s actually a mountain pass of the Jundu Mountain. This section of the wall was an ancient military defense project built to protect the city of Beijing from invaders from the north. Badaling is about 3,740 meters long and 8 meters high on average, although at some parts its height can reach up to 15 meters. The wall is narrow on the top and broad on the base making the wall stand firmly with rising and falling ridges. Still, it was built wide enough so five horses could ride side by side. It was made with stone blocks and mud on the inside, and huge stones outside, giving it a very clean and firm appearance. The wall has two types of fortresses every 300 to 500 meters. Some are two-storied fortress with its ground floor used for living and storing weapons, and the top floor for watching and shooting. The other ones were fighting terraces used for patrolling and fighting. In order to access the Great Wall, show the provided voucher at the Cable Car Ticket Office Hall. There you will be able to redeem your voucher for the entrance and cable car tickets. From Badaling Great wall entrance, you can take a 5 minutes’ shuttle bus to the bottom of the mountain or go there walking. Then you can use this cable car ticket to ride up the mountain and reach the Wall in 5 minutes. Once there, you can walk over passing several watch towers for different views. Or you can take the cable car down back to the entrance with same ticket.
